A Case Study in Sound Restoration & Noise Reduction

Client Background

A historical podcast series partnered with our audio production studio to restore decades-old interview tapes recorded during political movements in the 1970s. These archival audio files, originally captured on reel-to-reel tape, were plagued by hiss, static, low-end rumble, and microphone artifacts. The client’s mission was to revive these recordings for public release without sacrificing authenticity.

Project Objective

The objective was to apply advanced sound restoration & noise reduction techniques to clean up the archival recordings while preserving speech intelligibility and the emotional tone of the original voices. All processing had to meet modern streaming and broadcast standards through high quality audio recording workflows.

Challenges Faced

  • Heavy Noise Floor: Constant tape hiss and machine hum across all recordings.
  • Audio Artifacts: Pops, clicks, and dropouts from aging magnetic media.
  • Uneven Volume: Fluctuating speaker levels due to poor original mic technique.
  • Preserving Emotion: Cleaning the file without making voices sound too sterile or lifeless.

Execution

Our music and audio production team developed a careful multi-stage workflow inside our audio production studio:

  • Digital Transfer & Calibration: We transferred the tapes into 24-bit/96kHz digital format using calibrated reel decks to capture maximum detail.
  • Noise Reduction Pass: Using iZotope RX and Spectralayers, we removed hiss, hum, and background disturbances with surgical precision—preserving voice frequencies and harmonics.
  • Click & Pop Removal: Specialized modules targeted transient issues like pops and dropouts without introducing artifacts.
  • EQ & Tonal Repair: Dynamic EQ and harmonic restoration were applied to revive muffled mid-range frequencies and add clarity.
  • Loudness Matching: Dialogue was leveled consistently across files for a smooth listening experience.
  • Quality Control: Each file underwent headphone and monitor testing to ensure high quality audio recording standards, checking for over-processing or tonal imbalance.

Results Achieved

The restored interviews sounded remarkably clean, with voice details more audible and nuanced than ever before. Listeners praised the podcast for bringing archival voices “back to life.” The client was able to publish all episodes across Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and radio—with consistent streaming-quality results. The restored work is now being used in university archives and public historical exhibitions.
